The legendary Japanese brand SEIKO doesn’t miss with watches, do they? Trust me, they don’t. Ever since its inception in the late 1960’s, the SEIKO 5 sports collection has become a household name in being reliable and effective timepieces with mind-blowing price points. Talking about price points, SEIKO has managed to place themselves in a rarified league where “affordable” doesn’t connote “cheap” and for a collection like this where most watches are priced under $500, it is a testament to the fact that the SEIKO sports 5 line has indeed lived up to its famous tagline of being the biggest cheat code in watches at the moment.
With its launch just a couple of weeks ago, the SEIKO 5 Sports GMT collection, a series of 5 Sports watches designed with a GMT function for telling time in two time zones at once- has managed to establish itself as an exciting deal on the market early on. While there is not a lot that’s unknown about the series as most has been covered here, it is worthy to note that the new three watch models signify the first time that the 5 sports umbrella plays host to a GMT watch.
The Seiko 5 Sports GMT series is designed for travelers. A collection of Must-have fitted watch bands, rocking with these outstanding GMT watches.
This series is designed for the travelers, those who want to explore the world whilst keeping tabs on where they are and where they are coming from or potentially heading to. This has been made possible with this GMT model that comes with a second hour hand to help keep tabs on time in multiple locations at once and in real time. The watches come with a 42.5mm stainless steel case that takes a cue from the design of the SEIKO SKX series which is a well appreciated series of dive watches. The series offers three dial colors; the black-and-gray SSK001, the dark blue SSK003, and the life-vest pumpkin orange SSK005. All of them spot a separate GMT hand for indicating secondary time with the bezels donning a two-tone black/silver unidirectional design that helps distinguish between daylight and night time.
With this watch, you need to really commend SEIKO for raising the bar and here’s why: Traditional GMT watches are often expensive due to the need to incorporate a fourth hand that will help display a second time zone, and to pull that off would mean that the watches tend to retail in the range of a few thousand dollars and even more. For SEIKO to pull this series off within this budget range some retail at about $475, is impressive and in retrospect, it was worth the wait all this while for a SEIKO GMT watch. This was made possible by modifying the basic 4R36 movements found in the collection’s time only watches and giving it the GMT’s new engine known as the 4R34. This new engine can be seen through the watch’s case backs but the 0.1-millimeter difference in length as compared to the other SEIKO 5 sports models cannot be noticed from that angle. One thing that can be noticed though using the exhibition case back is the watch’s inner mechanisms. While peering into the watch, the user also gets to appreciate the hardlex crystal that helps protect the watch from any form of scratches or dent to its appearance.
The bezels of Seiko GMT watches donning a two-tone unidirectional design that helps distinguish between daylight and night time.
Coupled with this new engine comes a 41-hour power reserve alongside automatic winding for consistent and accurate timing. To even add more cherry on the cake is the fact that it is water resistant up to 100 meters meaning it can be worn when snorkeling. The SSK001 and SSK003 versions of this timepiece model comes with their GMT hands dressed in bright red color and in the life-vest pumpkin orange model, the GMT hand is in black. This color combination helps to stand out against the dial background, The GMT hands are also coated in lumibrite that helps for better legibility in the dark- a decent aesthetic touch if you ask me. A date display window replaces the 3 o’clock marker with a cyclops lens that helps magnify and enables you read it more easily with The SEIKO sports 5 logo also cutely presented in silver beneath the 12 o’ clock logo.
This timepiece model also creates room for a fascinating bracelet allocation as it gets presented on a solid stainless JUB bracelet that displays its beautiful brushed and polished surfaces. Coming with a push deployment clasp, it fastens using a fold and also features a diver’s extension; this is not surprising considering how many elements of this model were copied from the SKX series.
